Project overview

A commercial plaza lighting project for Futian City Plaza in Shenzhen, requiring silicone neon flex outlines across retail podium facades, pedestrian circulation guides, and architectural contour lighting. The project demanded IP67 weather protection, DMX512 dynamic color control for seasonal themes, consistent glow uniformity across 200+ meters of neon flex runs, and a scalable control architecture supporting phased tenant fit-out over multiple years. Mihoray supplied custom-dimension silicone neon flex with matched outdoor drivers and DMX controllers.

Client needs

  • Strong nighttime retail identity with distinctive architectural glow lines along 200+ meters of podium frontage
  • Homogenous light output on curved podium metalwork without bright spots or dark gaps at bending transitions
  • DMX-controlled dynamic color capability for seasonal campaigns and holiday lighting themes
  • Scalable control architecture supporting phased tenant fit-out over a 3-year development schedule
  • IP67 weather protection suitable for subtropical climate with heavy rainfall periods

Technical challenges

  • Maintaining uniform glow intensity across 15-20 meter continuous neon flex runs with varying bending radii around podium metalwork
  • Achieving IP67-rated waterproof continuity at all connection points, corners, and end caps in an exposed subtropical environment with 2000mm annual rainfall
  • Designing a DMX512 control system scalable from initial Phase 1 (80 meters) to full build-out (250+ meters) without rewiring
  • Color consistency between production batches delivered across three project phases spanning 18 months
  • Mechanical retention of neon flex on curved metalwork surfaces subject to wind load and thermal expansion

Mihoray solution

Mihoray developed a custom-profile silicone neon flex specifically dimensioned for the plaza's podium metalwork channels — 12×20mm top-emitting profile with an integrated mounting channel for stainless steel clips at 200mm intervals, providing mechanical security against wind uplift while accommodating thermal expansion.

The silicone housing material was selected over PVC for its superior UV resistance and guaranteed non-yellowing performance over the 8-10 year expected service life in Shenzhen's subtropical climate with high UV index.

Power architecture uses 24V constant-voltage outdoor drivers (IP67-rated) with DMX512 digital control enabling individual zone addressing. The system supports 512 individually controllable zones, with the initial Phase 1 using 80 addresses and infrastructure pre-wired for expansion to the full 250+ meter build-out.

Production color calibration ensures all neon flex batches delivered across the three project phases maintain color coordinates within SDCM 3 tolerance — visually indistinguishable when installed adjacent to product from earlier phases.

Project results

  • Achieved consistent glow uniformity across all 200+ meters of installed neon flex with no visible brightness variations at bending transitions
  • Zero waterproof failures reported across two full rainy seasons (4000mm cumulative rainfall exposure)
  • DMX control system successfully expanded from Phase 1 (80m) to Phase 2 (160m) without any system rewiring or controller replacement
  • Phase 2 neon flex installation visually matches Phase 1 product delivered 8 months earlier — no color difference visible
  • Nighttime foot traffic increased approximately 25% in retail areas with completed lighting compared to unlit sections during phased installation

Project background

Futian City Plaza is a mixed-use commercial development in Shenzhen's Futian Central Business District, combining retail podium levels with office towers. The plaza's architectural design uses metalwork canopy structures and curved facade elements that define the retail streetscape. The lighting concept called for continuous glow lines that trace these architectural forms, creating a distinctive nighttime identity that extends the plaza's daytime architectural language. The project was planned as a phased development with tenants occupying spaces over a 3-year schedule, requiring a lighting control architecture that could expand zone-by-zone without system-wide modifications.

Design approach

Mihoray's design approach centered on silicone neon flex as the primary light source, selected for its ability to produce homogeneous glow lines around the complex curves of the podium metalwork. Unlike rigid linear fixtures that would require custom bending at each curve, neon flex can follow organic architectural forms while maintaining consistent optical output. The custom 12×20mm profile was developed through iterative prototyping with the project's metalwork fabricator to ensure the mounting channel dimensions and clip positions aligned with the facade contractor's construction tolerances. The DMX512 control layer was designed as a trunk-and-branch architecture: a fiber-optic backbone connects zone controllers, with each controller managing a section of the plaza independently. This architecture allows new zones to be added by connecting additional branch controllers without affecting existing operational areas.

Installation process

Installation began with the mounting infrastructure: stainless steel clips were positioned and welded to the metalwork frames during facade fabrication, before cladding installation. This integration approach means the neon flex mounting system is structurally permanent and does not rely on adhesive or surface-mount methods. Neon flex was installed in 10-15 meter sections with sealed inline connectors at each joint. Each connector joint uses a double-seal design with silicone potting compound to achieve IP67 at the connection point — the most vulnerable location in any linear outdoor lighting installation. DMX wiring runs in concealed channels within the metalwork structure, with access points at each zone controller location for future maintenance.

Project outcome

The Futian City Plaza project demonstrates Mihoray's capability to deliver custom-engineered neon flex solutions for complex commercial architectural applications. The phased deployment approach — designing a control infrastructure that scales across years of tenant fit-out — represents a practical model for mixed-use development lighting that avoids costly system-wide upgrades. The project serves as a reference for commercial developers, retail architects, and facade consultants evaluating neon flex as an architectural lighting medium for large-scale urban projects in demanding climate zones.
