Project background

The Chengdu Sheraton Hotel, a premium international hospitality property in Sichuan Province, undertook a comprehensive lighting renovation program in 2024. The property required a complete upgrade of its linear cove lighting across guest rooms, corridors, lobby reception, executive lounge, and public dining areas. The existing fluorescent-based cove system showed color inconsistency, high maintenance burden, and incompatibility with the hotel's modernized DALI control infrastructure. The hotel's design consultant specified LED strip lighting with strict performance requirements: CRI ≥90 for accurate rendering of interior materials and guest skin tones, warm 3000K CCT for relaxation atmosphere, and dot-free uniformity suitable for the close viewing distances (0.5-1.5m) typical in guest room ceiling coves.

Design approach

Mihoray's engineering team proposed COB (Chip on Board) LED strip technology rather than conventional SMD strips based on the close viewing distance requirement. COB strips embed 512 LED chips per meter directly onto the PCB substrate, producing a continuous luminous surface without visible individual dots — essential for the premium aesthetic expected in international hotel properties. The system was designed on 24V architecture to support continuous runs of 8-12 meters per feed point, matching typical room perimeter lengths without requiring mid-run power injection. Each strip run terminates at an aluminum profile end cap with a waterproof connector for maintenance access. The aluminum profile design integrates a thermal management channel that keeps LED junction temperature below 65°C even in enclosed ceiling cavities, maintaining the rated 50,000-hour L70 lifespan under continuous evening operation.

Installation process

Installation followed a phased approach: first the aluminum profiles were mechanically fixed into ceiling cove recesses using spring clips at 500mm intervals. Wiring was pre-routed to driver locations accessible through maintenance panels in corridors. COB strips were then inserted into profiles and connected using tool-free plug connectors — allowing any future strip replacement without electrical work. Each floor was commissioned independently with DALI address assignment and scene programming. Mihoray provided pre-labeled strips and drivers with matching floor/zone codes to eliminate on-site confusion during installation.

The documented BOM approach means the hotel can re-order exact replacement products for future renovation phases without re-specification.
